Hello Friends and Happy Fri-Yay!

Is your palate stuck in a rut…do you find yourself always ordering the same foods…pizza, cheese steaks or Chinese takeout?  Do you want something different while supporting a new local business, then I suggest you try Swahili Kitchen on Main Street in Middletown.

Swahili Kitchen specializes in East African cuisine, specifically recipes from Tanzania, and although the menu is new it’s actually the second part of Manhattan Bagel, also owned by Rishen Patel and his wife Heeral.

The concept of adding a different offering in an already thriving breakfast business was a great idea, Rishen stated that after 2 p.m. no one was coming in to buy bagels so he decided to offer his native foods.  In Middletown you can find every type of food except African style which is what motivated the Patels to open Swahili Kitchen.

On Sunday, hubby and I stopped in and decided to try the chicken and beef items from the promotional menu, which also included Pork Kebabs, but you know we don’t eat pork.  If you like mildly spicy foods you will definitely enjoy the Chicken dishes, especially the marinated leg quarters called Sekela.  There was just the right balance of seasoning including curry and the chips weren’t soggy even with the veggie topping.  The promotional prices, currently $5 and under were very reasonable considering the portion sizes which were more than enough for leftovers.

The Chicken Mishkaki is listed as being served on a skewer, but since we had take out it was simply placed in a Styrofoam container.  The Tamarind Sauce was a perfect compliment to this dish of very tender chicken cubes, potatoes, green peppers and onions slices.

What are called “chips” in Africa are actually what we call “fries”, and they are topped with a veggie mix of shredded carrots, cabbage and red onions and a perfect blend of spices.

Chicken Pili Pili is a spicy BBQ leg quarter served with white rice and coleslaw

Dinner was excellent and the side sauce added just the right amount of “fire” for me!

So this weekend if you are in the mood for something different head over to Swahili Kitchen which is located at 400 W. Main St. and their hours of operation are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday)

Hello Friends, I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

The weather was absolutely gorgeous and not having to cook gave me more time to be outside and enjoy it.  Saturday I was set up at Dutch Country Farmer’s Market, and although there was a lot of foot traffic I didn’t do as well as expected.  I did manage to sell a lot of books, some household items and a few pieces of jewelry, but the clothing that did not sell was donated to Goodwill.  Hubby and the boys chose Chinese Takeout for dinner so it was Shrimp Fried Rice, Steamed Vegetables and Chicken Mei Fun.

Today we all worked outdoors, hubby and the sons on the lawn and cars, me with setting out the patio furniture and cushions before doing the weekly grocery shopping.  I knew I wasn’t going to cook a Sunday dinner so instead we went to Farmer’s Famous Fish for sandwiches and fries.

My outfit of the day was a maxi dress and cardigan which was perfect for today’s weather.

Have a fantabulous evening – Smooches!

bathroom scale

The Freshman 15 is nothing compared to the Menopause 20!  In college I could skip a meal and lose 5 pounds, now if I look at a piece of bread I gain 5 pounds.

The Personal Summers were handled with portable fans and cotton clothing;
The absence of menses was happily welcomed and handled;
The dryness was handled with personal lubricants like KY, Poise and a patient hubby;
The mood swings were handled with red wine and an understanding family
The weight gain is NOT BEING HANDLED WELL

A woman’s body is constantly going through changes, some of them good, others not so much. I’m in the 4th year of menopause and was handling it well until the extra pounds began to increase my body mass index (BMI). Initially I blamed it on the stress of caring for my grandmother before her death in 2009; then I blamed it on kicking a 30-year smoking habit; then on the snow storm of 2010, and the chips I ate while watching the flakes fall.  Next it was the long commute, 3 hours a day back and forth to work. I would walk in the afternoons and on the elliptical in the evenings but it wasn’t enough to burn the necessary calories or speed up my metabolism. Zumba is fun but I haven’t lost a single pound, I did however, twist my knee and realize that I’ve lost all of my rhythm!

I used Sensa, lost 10 lbs, put it back on,  joined NutriSystem, lost 20 lbs, put it back on, cleansed with lemonade laced with cayenne pepper, went carb and sugar free – I hate the bathroom scale!  I’ve gone to the doctor, had my thyroid checked, drink shots of ACV with water after each meal but the pounds refuse to leave.  I’ve tried eDiets, me diets, ABC diets with no success. To say it’s frustrating would be an understatement and I’m getting desperate to lose the “Menopause 20”, and refuse to give up the challenge!

Medical reports state that weight gain during menopause is not uncommon or even my fault, that it’s hormonal and I need to increase the intensity of exercise, (where is Richard Simmons when you need him), and decrease the intake of certain foods and beverages.  So no more Sriracha flavored chips and beer, Triscuits and Cabot cheese or Mexican and Chinese takeout, a sacrifice that I am willing to make.  Tomorrow I fill the grocery cart with lots of fresh fruits, veggies and fish in an attempt to rid myself of the Menopause 20 – wish me luck.

Is weight loss a challenge for you, if so, what is your strategy?
