Hello Friends, I hope you are having a terrific Tuesday!

Saturday, I had the BEST fish sandwich that I’ve ever eaten in my life and “that’s the truth Ruth!”  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had plenty of good fried fish sandwiches; my cousin in New Rochelle can throw down; my church sells some mean fried fish dinners on Fridays; last year I waited almost an hour for a piece of fried fish at Del State’s homecoming; and I always buy fish sandwiches from Dale United Methodist Church at The Middletown Peach FestivalBUT The Farmer Family, owners of Farmers Famous Fish, can throw down, their fish sandwiches are by far the best I’ve ever tasted!

This ‘old school famous fish fry is located in the corner of the BP parking lot on Routes 896/40 in Glasgow, DE.  They will be celebrating their 1st Year Anniversary at this location in August and their seasonal opening was last weekend – they sold out on both days!  Farmers Famous Fish is a home-based catering business, and their family and friends have tried to convince them to open a restaurant, but for now they want to be out and about in the community so these Weekend Warriors also set up at other events including Community Day in Newark.

Farmer’s Famous Fish is a family friendly operation headed by David and Troy Farmer that also includes their sons David, Jr. (21), Tyelor (18) and Daniel (13).  Only quality fish including Swai, Cod and Pollock is used because it’s great for deep frying and also has a light, flaky texture with a hint of sweetness.  Hand cut, fresh potatoes sprinkled with a Cajun seasoning are placed alongside two pieces of golden fried fish on a soft, fresh baked roll.  The fish is then topped with their (secret recipe) Chipolte coleslaw, a few thin slices of red onion and lemon wedges (my mouth waters just thinking about it).

My suggestion is while waiting for your sandwich and fries try a piece of Troy’s World Famous Sweet Potato Cornbread, it’s delicious, not overly sweet and your taste buds will thank you.  You may want to buy another piece to save for dessert later, ask to have a little confectioners sugar sprinkled on top.

It would be great to see Farmers Famous Fish featured on an episode of The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives because this is not grease laden fish slapped between two pieces of Wonder Bread soaked in hot sauce, not sayin those aren’t good but – these are “Slap ‘Yo Mama – It’s So Good” fish sandwiches and I will definitely be going back for more (diet is officially over!)

December to April 545

Farmers Famous Fish is a cash-only stand that is open every Saturday and Sunday until November and soon they will be adding Fish Tacos and Meat loaf to the menu.

Like them on Facebook to keep up with the specials.

In our house cold weather signals the time for a hardy and healthy winter soup!  My grandmother (RIP Mama), used to make the best homemade vegetable soups, I can still taste the seasoned carrots, tomatoes, onions, celery and of course the soup bone with marrow.  I was looking for new recipes and came across one that included kale which is my favorite vegetable.

ImageIngredients:

kale, soup beans, canned tomatoes, garlic, frozen veggies and soup stock.

I was going to use the smoked turkey necks but there wasn’t enough room in the pot.  I had to use a larger crock pot because the bag of beans which had soaked overnight really expanded and I didn’t want to discard any of them.  After spraying the crock pot with cooking spray I poured in the frozen veggies, beans, tomatoes, a spoonful of garlic and then topped with handfuls of kale.  One packet of the homestyle stock was dissolved in warm water enough to cover the beans.

Cooked on low for 8-10 hours.

I came home to a house smelling GOOD and a fully prepared dinner!  This soup was healthy, delicious and very filling, hubby topped his with a little Goat Cheese and I added a piece of brown bread (carbs are my down fall) and hot sauce!

FRI-YAY!!! I am so looking forward to the weekend because tomorrow is Middletown’s Annual Peach Festival. There are activities for children, a local artist exhibit, historical exhibits, a peach pie contest, crafts, music, food, games, and of course – peaches! The parade starts at 9:00 am but I don’t go just to see that or for “all things peaches”, but specifically for the fried fish sandwiches sold by Dale United Methodist Church!! Three large pieces of fried fish on soft white Wonder Bread soaked with hot sauce ….oh my…I’m drooling already. I know it’s not healthy but man oh man… it is just too good for words and I only indulge once a year.

In September, the month of my birth there is another annual event just as unhealthy, apple picking at Milburn Orchards in Elkton, MD. Apple picking isn’t unhealthy, but the warm, fresh-from-the-oven Apple Cider Donuts are, I won’t even begin to describe them! The boys and I along with my grandmother (God Rest Her Soul) would always start off the season by heading to Milburn Orchards to pick our own fresh apples from a variety of trees. The boys would smash the rotten ones on the ground (must be a boy thing) and jump up high to get the big juicy ones. Apple picking may start early because last Friday, I looked across the yard at my neighbor’s broken fence and saw a small tree laden with apples. I may not need to drive to Elkton, perhaps just a simple walk over to grab a few for my morning Smoothies will be enough. Broken Fences Make Good Neighbors – lol

God blessed us with another gorgeous summer weekend and today I am plowing through Monday like a turtle on steroids!   This morning I had to add extra spinach and kale to my green smoothie because I over did it with the sodium and suds.   Yesterday afternoon good friends of ours stopped by the house after leaving Maryland en-route home to New York.   Anytime someone visits us from Maryland I always have just one request – BRING SOME CRABS!!!!   In our house summer isn’t complete without sitting at the table covered in newspaper with a bowl of melted butter and hot sauce cracking open steamed crabs covered in Old Bay Seasoning.   Of course I must wash it down with a cold beer!   Add some boiled corn (which I forgot), potato salad and shrimp and everything is right with the world.

This outfit was laid out last week, and it’s perfect for today because it’s covering the results of too much sodium and suds but oh it was so well worth it!

Monday…Monday…Monday…coming off a high carb, no exercise weekend and it shows!  Saturday afternoon we went to a friend’s Bar-B-Que and the food was awesome!   They had jerk chicken, fried chicken, barbecue chicken, mac and cheese, peas and rice, green beans, corn, salmon cakes, pasta salad, green salad, ribs, beer, wine, coolers and other adult beverages.  I had a few pieces of jerk chicken, peas and rice and  2 salmon cakes because our hosts are from Trinidad so you know it was authentic finger-lickin, slam yo mama good!  I thought about taking pictures but decided to only feature the 3 bottles of hot sauce, one of which was the “3 5 7 Mad Dog” and I definitely needed a shot of milk after tasting this one!
