Ramadan Kareem !

Ramadan (also known as Ramadhan or Ramzan) is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving and self-accountability for Muslims in the United States. The first verses of the Koran (Qu’ran) were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (also written as Mohammad or Muhammed) during the last third of Ramadan, making this an especially holy period.

What do people do?

Ramadan is a month of fasting for many Muslims in the United States. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars (fundamental religious duties) of Islam. It is a time of self-examination and increased religious devotion.

People of Islamic faith are encouraged to read the entire Qur’an during Ramadan. Some Muslims recite the entire Qur’an by the end of Ramadan through special prayers known as Tarawih, which are held in mosques every night of the month, during which a section of the Qur’an is recited.  Ramadan is also a month for acts of charity. Some Islamic centers and organizations actively take part in charity events and activities such as giving basic necessities, including food and clothing, to the homeless or donating school equipment to schools.

Some schools for students of Islamic faith may hold special events to welcome Ramadan. Some school authorities may issue requests on or prior to Ramadan, asking staff members at all schools within a district to help Muslim students perform their fasting ritual.

Public life

Many Islamic businesses and organizations may amend opening hours to suit prayer times during Ramadan in the United States. There may also be some congestion around mosques during prayer times, such as in the evenings.

Background

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which consists of 12 months and lasts for about 354 days. The word “Ramadan” is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground and shortness of food and drink. It is considered to be the most holy and blessed month. Fighting is not allowed during this period.

The month of Ramadan traditionally begins with a new moon sighting, marking the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims (except children, the sick and the elderly) abstain from food, drink, and certain other activities during daylight hours in Ramadan. This is considered as the holiest season in the Islamic year and commemorates the time when the Qu’ran (Islamic holy book) is said to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. This occurred on Laylat Al-Qadr, one of the last 10 nights of the month.  Ramadan ends when the first crescent of the new moon is sighted again, marking the new lunar month’s start. Eid-al-Fitr is the Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

Ramadan begins Observances

Note: Regional customs or moon sightings may cause a variation of the date for Islamic holidays, which begin at sundown the day before the date specified for the holiday. The Islamic calendar is lunar and the days begin at sunset, so there may be one-day error depending on when the New Moon is first seen.

Oprah Winfrey launched the OWN Network on January 1, 2011, but I have to admit that I didn’t know what channel it was on nor what shows were being featured.  That has since changed with the introduction of  Tyler Perry’s two new hit shows, The Haves and The Have Nots on Tuesday nights and Love Thy Neighbor on Wednesday nights.  My television cable box is now locked on VerizonFios Channel 161!

Tyler Perry, the genius behind the “Madea” stage plays and movies, had made his mark on the small screen with the TBS sitcoms House of Payne, Meet The Browns and For Better or Worse, which was based on his movie Why Did I Get Married?but he has taken it to a whole new level with The Haves and The Have Nots!

Think of Dynasty, Falcon Crest and Dallas all rolled up for the 21st century, where the deceit and duplicity is doubled, but praying and thanking Jesus is the foundation.  Not only is prayer and a strong belief in God prominently displayed in these shows, it is also what makes Tyler Perry the man that he is today.  I honestly believe that his mother is sitting in Heaven on the right side of God, nudging him, saying, “see…see…that’s my boy…watch him work!”

Love Thy Neighbor is a sitcom featuring Mama Hattie, a strong woman running a diner, working hard and trying to keep her recently divorced daughter off her couch, because she just got her recently employed grandson off of it!  I love Hattie’s feistiness and warm heart, and her voice will you have sitting upright.  It seems as though all the cast members work extremely well together, each bringing their own style and flair.  The stand outs are  Tika Sumpter, who plays Candace, the beautiful devil diva in The Haves and The Have Nots, and Jonathon Chase, who plays Sam in Love Thy Neighbor, a hilarious man-child whose comedic timing and mannerisms reminds me of a young Jim Carrey!

If you haven’t seen The Haves and The Have Nots or Love Thy Neighbor, I urge you to check them out, I know once you start you’ll be hooked.  When you do, make sure to join in on the weekly Twitter Chats because you never know, your tweet just might be retweeted by Oprah or Tyler – mine were!

Hello Friends and Happy Monday, I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

I had an online weekend…reading and commenting on Blogs…updating status’…tweeting….Instagraming…Sverving…and…creating a Facebook Campaign, “Bloggers4JCPenney“. There were several bloggers who liked the concept and submitted their posts, I hope you’ll check it out and do the same.

Saturday, I received my first Influenster VOXBOX, and will be posting a review later this week. Sunday, I went to church, wore green and cooked CornBeef, Cabbage and Potatoes for St. Patty’s Day. Tomorrow #1 son has an interview at Bank of America, he and I will be meeting his DVR job coach at 1:00.  The job market is tough made even more so when you have a disability so please say a little prayer for him.

We were all hoping for another warm weekend but it seems like ‘ole Man Winter is back for one last hurrah! Wednesday is officially the first day of Spring so I’m mixing in a little bright colors with today’s all black outfit.

Are you planning a special “1st Day of Spring” outfit or will you wait until it gets warmer?

Have a fantabulous afternoon – Smooches!

Hello friends and Happy Sunday I hope you had a wonderful weekend and are anxiously looking forward to next week. This year we are not having a big Thanksgiving dinner because my son has to work and my mother-in- law is hospitalized battling intestinal cancer.
I ask that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers during this time, thank you.

Although we are not having a big Thanksgiving dinner I still needed to grocery shop and today it wasn’t a chore. I did however, feel sorry for some running around quickly filling their carts like crazy spending way too much!
My casual attire along with my casual attitude allowed me to better compare prices, use a lot of coupons and save a little money.
