Birthday Dinner at Ali Baba Middle Eastern Restaurant

Posted on: May 7, 2012

On Saturday, we took hubby to dinner at Ali Baba Middle Eastern Restaurant in Newark, http://www.alibabacuisine.com .  We hadn’t been there since August and being it was Cinco de Mayo most of the students from the University were at Mexican restaurants so we were seated immediately.

Tayair

The food is authentic Moroccan, very flavorful and everything is made fresh to order so you have to wait a little bit.  We sat in the backroom, which is decorated in tapestries and sofa seating, the soft cushions and pillows made it a comfortable wait.  Afterwards the wait staff don’t try to rush you out which also makes your dining experience pleasant.

We started with the Stuffed Grapes leaves, my son used the pita bread to wrap his, but they were perfectly warm when they arrived at the table.  We each had a different entrée so that we could taste a little of each.

I ordered the Samke Harra, a flaky fresh salmon filet, baked with tahini, garlic, cumin, onion, pine nuts, lemon juice, and parsley. It was served with a side of tabouli salad which contains parsley my favorite herb.  Along with a cup of mint tea it was heavenly!

Hubby had the Moroccan Chicken which had a harisa cumin sauce (spicy), served with a side of Eastern rice.  It was suggested that he pull back the skin if it was too spicy but he suffered through, sniffling while enjoying this awesome chicken dish.

Tayair had the chicken kabobs, which were cubes of chicken breast marinated and grilled, served on a bed of Middle Eastern rice.  He normally doesn’t eat much of anything unless it pizza, but he ate his entire meal without stopping.  After he finished his meal, “itis” kicked in and he leaned back, sleepy eyed on the cushions ready to nap!

al-Malik ordered the Lamb & Beef Gyro Pita Wrap from the lunch menu, but after seeing how small it was he decided to take it home.  He then ordered the lamb kabobs which were marinated and charbroiled and served on a bed of Middle Eastern rice.

Afterwards we were all fully satisfied with no room for dessert.  Can’t wait for the next visit to Ali Baba!
